Steinertor
This three-part series focuses on Steinertor, the only city gate in Krems that remained after the demolition of the defensive walls in the late 1800s. Steinertor used to house the Neuner underwear shop, whose owners perished during World War II. The pieces reveal a jarring juxtaposition of a beloved city symbol and the dark patterns lurking from its past. To emphasize this unsettling contrast of the beautiful and the bleak, the pieces are created on locally sourced old sewing and embroidery sheets. The last one, Patterns, is created on a 1936 clothes and underwear sewing pattern found at the Krems flea market.
This series was created during my 11-week residency in Krems, Austria (AiR Lower Austria).
