STALAG XVII B Krems-Gneixendorf: The Danube
The STALAG XVII B Krems-Gneixendorf series evokes a personal history chapter: my late grandfather was a survivor of the prisoner of war camp in Keisersteinbruch (Stalag XVII A). The figurative part of the pieces from this series is based on an aerial photograph of the Krems-Gneixendorf camp, taken by the Allies in 1941. There are ten pieces in this series, four of which were inked and then washed in the Danube, evoking the Psalm 137 (“By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept”) and with it the horrors of wartime imprisonment.
This series was created during my 11-week residency in Krems, Austria (AiR Lower Austria).
