Landesgericht Krems

The series tackles a dark period of Krems’ history, embodied within the walls of the Regional Court building from 1933. This structure continues to evoke an abyss: the court architect eventually became prominent in the National Socialist party; the interior murals were painted over in 1938 as ‘degenerate art’; nearly 200 political prisoners were once incarcerated here. And yet, the building is still used today for its original purpose: to carry out the law. Dissolving black-ink grids under the recognizable entrance façade encourage questioning of the supposed objectivity, structure and order of any given legal system – and draw the eye and the mind to its darkest tangles.

This series was created during my 11-week residency in Krems, Austria (AiR Lower Austria).
